Childhood

Born in Siguiri, Guinea, N'Faly Kouyaté grew up in the famous Konkoba Cabinet Kouyate family, a line of Mandingue griots known for their mastery of mystical secrets and the profound wisdom of Mandinga culture. From an early age, he was introduced to the ancestral traditions of his people, learning to play kora, balaphon and jambé under the tutelage of his father, Konkoba Kabinet Kouyaté, a high-ranking and highly respected griot.

Carrier start

After perfectioning his art in several Guinean musical ensembles, such as the Conakry University Troupe, The Heirs of Sory Kandia Kouyaté and the National Troupe of Guinea, N'Faly Koujaté decided to continue his education in Europe. In 1994, he moved to Brussels, Belgium, where he studied electronic music at the Conservatory, thus opening new perspectives to his art.

Musical career

It was in Brussels that N'Faly Kouyaté began to make himself known on the international stage. In 1996, he joined the group Afro Celt Sound System, a group of Celtic and African musicians who skillfully blend traditional and electronic sounds. With his powerful voice and virtuous kora play, N'Faly Kouyaté quickly became a key element of the band, contributing to their global success with acclaimed albums such as "Further In Time" (2001), nominated for the Grammy Awards in the "Best Music Album in the World" category.

Alongside his work with Afro Celt Sound System, N'Faly Kouyaté pursued a successful solo career. In 2001, he released his first solo album "N'na Kandjé" under the name of his group Dunyakan (La Voix du Monde), harmoniously blending Mandingue influences, blues, jazz and world music. His touching performance moved the audience to tears during performances at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, the Holland Festival in Amsterdam, the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern in London, the Ruhrtriennale in Duisburg, and the Park Avenue Armory in New York.
