Born in 1964 in Kissidougou, Guinea, Djeli Fodé Kouyaté is a renowned Guinean composer, arranger and singer. Childhood

The son of Mama Kanté and Djélyden Kabinet Kouyaté, Fodé is the nephew of the famous Guinean griot Mory Kanté. He was the direct descendant of the Griot Balla Fasséké Kouyaté, one of the contemporaries of Soumangourou Kanté, King of Sosso. At the age of nine, Fodé already performed all of his mother's songs, thus showing a natural disposition for music.

Carrier start

Arriving in Conakry in 1976 for his primary studies, Fodé quickly became prominent on the local music scene from 1978. After the premature death of his mother Hadja Mama Kanté in 1982 in Medina, Saudi Arabia, Fodé joined his sister in Fria where he began vocational training at the Kimbo aluminum factory. However, music remained his true vocation and he eventually formed a small musical group called "Les Étoiles de Kimbo".

Musical career

In 1986, Fodé returned to Conakry and joined the orchestra "Atlantique Mélodie" in which he recorded his first songs at Radio Télévision Guineenne. It was in 1993 that he decided to go solo, making his first television recording. Production company CDS Production then spotted him and took him to Côte d'Ivoire, where he released his first album "Salatou" in 1995. The following year, in 1997, he paid tribute to Guinean President Lansana Conté with the title "Wisdom".

Engagement and musical themes

Known as the "Djély of Kissifaramaya" in Guinea, Fodé Kouyaté is known for the social and political commitment of his songs, which often evoke popular themes of Guinean life. His involvement in social and humanitarian causes, as well as his regular artistic production, led to him being named an honorary traveling ambassador of the pan-African organization Africa-Aid-Africa by Senegal’s President Abdoulaye Wade.
